Participate in Daemen University’s annual Portfolio Day and you could be chosen to receive a $5,000 annual scholarship award.

PORTFOLIO DAY

Submit your portfolio physically or online for a chance to receive a $5,000 annual scholarship award at Daemen University. Scholarships will be awarded to High School senior students.

Artwork can be picked up on Monday, February 26th and Tuesday, February 27th in the VPAC Gallery from 2-6 pm.

 
 

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

  1. Collect:

    • Reference the “Artwork Recommendations” section below and gather your best work for review.

  2. Prepare:

    • Prepare your Portfolio Day submission in accordance to the “Submission Guidelines” section below.

    • Join us at our In-Person Portfolio Review on Saturday 2/10/2024 from 10:00AM-12:00PM at Daemen University’s Nancy Haberman Gacioch Center for the Visual & Performing Arts and receive personal feedback on your work from Daemen faculty, hear from currently enrolled Daemen Art students, and more.

    • Learn more about the event below or sign up for your 15 minute review slot.

    • It is not required to attend the In-person Portfolio Review to receive a $5,000 annual scholarship award.

    • The In-Person Portfolio Review is open to both High School juniors and seniors interested in receiving feedback on their portfolio before submitting it to Daemen University for admittance into the Art Department.

  5. Collect:

    • Your portfolio will need to be retained for review. Portfolios will be available for collection in the Admissions Office in Rosary Hall at Daemen University during business hours from 2/12/24 - 2/15/24.

    • Scholarship winners will be notified by letter; letters will be mailed the following week.

Event Activities:

  • Meet one-on-one with a Daemen University Art professor to review your portfolio.

  • Meet current Art students who will share their experiences at Daemen University.

  • Get the chance to hear from a panel of students discuss each Art program offered Daemen University.

  • Take a student-led campus tour, including an in-depth view of the Visual & Performing Arts Center. 

  • Enjoy a complimentary meal in our dining hall.

ARTWORK RECOMMENDATIONS

  • We encourage you to submit your strongest, most recent work; pieces that you are most excited about and that reflect your voice, your style, and your interests.

  • Observational pieces are very important for your portfolio. It is recommended that you include works drawn and painted from direct observation.

  • Works in a variety of media are encouraged. Feel free to include drawings, paintings, digital work, animation, printmaking, sculpture, photography, collage and others.

  • Faculty are keen to see examples of technical proficiency; as well as creativity, curiosity, experimentation and personality.

 

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Portfolio Requirements:

The following portfolio requirements must be met to be selected for a Portfolio Day scholarship:

  1. A portfolio of 10-15 pieces of your best work.

  2. A current, unofficial high school transcript.


Physical Submission:

  • Deadline: Drop off your physical portfolio to the Admissions Office in Rosary Hall at Daemen University during business hours Monday-Friday by 2/2/2024 OR during the All High Art Exhibition’s opening ceremony Saturday 2/3/2024 from 2:30-4:00PM at Daemen’s Tower Gallery in the Nancy Haberman Gacioch Center for Visual & Performing Arts.

  • Ensure that all work is neatly organized and presented for ease of review.

  • Ensure that your name and email are clearly displayed on the exterior of your portfolio.

  • If your physical portfolio submission includes any digital work:

    • Ensure that all work is neatly organized on a USB Flash Drive.

    • Ensure that your work is clear and not pixelated.

    • Ensure your name and email are clearly displayed on your USB Flash Drive

  • Your portfolio will need to be retained for review. Portfolios will be available for collection 2/12/24 - 2/15/24.

    • Participants must submit a single “zip” file with all their files.

    • To create a zip file follow the instructions below:

      • Mac: Select your files, right click and select “compress”.

      • Windows: Select your files, right click, select “send to” and then select “compressed (zipped) folder”.

  • File guidelines:

    • Letter files accepted: PDF, DOC, DOCX.

    • File naming convention: “LastName-FirstName-Title”

    • Image files accepted: JPG, JPEG, PDF, TIFF, or PNG

    • Image resolution: At least 72 pixels per inch (72ppi)

    • Video files accepted: MP4, AVI, or MOV

    • Maximum zip file size: 25MB


Submission Tips:

  • Scanning 2D work: at a high resolution provides to most faithful digital version of your piece.

  • Photographing 2D work: make sure the piece is clear and in focus, the piece is straight on and not at an angle, and the piece is well lit.

  • Photographing 3D work: Feel free to submit 1-3 photographs of each three-dimensional piece, these will be counted as one portfolio piece. These photos should show the artwork from different angles to help the viewer gain a clear understanding of the piece.

    • When photographing 3D work the 3 most important things are:

      • The images are clear and in focus.

      • There is a clean, uncluttered background for your photographs (unless the location/background is important to the piece).

      • The image is well lit; avoid lighting that is too bright or too dark. Aim for lighting that allows the viewer to clearly see the artwork.


 

SCHOLARSHIP CONDITIONS

  • Scholarship winners will be notified by letter; letters will be mailed the following week.

  • Only students applying to begin their studies in Fall 2024 are eligible for scholarship awards.

  • Scholarship winners must submit their Daemen University application by April 1st 2024 to receive their scholarship.

  • Portfolio scholarships may only be used toward art majors.

  • Scholarships are renewed annually provided the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA or higher.
